Butterflies & Happy Faces In Instagram World!

Okay I will admit it, I like millions of other igers (Instagrammers), am addicted to posting my photos on Instagram @WillowTreeMedia, but maybe not for the reason you think.

It’s because unlike other social media platforms (hint, hint Youtube), participants of Instagram are there to build you up, not tear you down.

When you post one of your photos publically, people you don’t know from all over the world will use emoticon’s to “heart” or “thumbs-up” or “applaud” your photographs, or leave nice messages like “love the photo” or “fantastic shot”.

Honestly, there are few things in life that feel as good as posting a photo and suddenly seeing 25 people liking it and/or leaving compliments or following your feed.

Instagram delivers instant gratification… It offers instant admirers, and sometimes new friends.  Not too many places in this world still exist where you can get those kinds of accolades. (Do I sound cynical?” said the mother of two loving boys, but not-forthcoming-with-compliments.)

Now mind you, there are rules. But like everything else in Instagram World, they are courteous and nice ones.

You must take the time to thank anyone who leaves you a comment by using their @ name.  It’s easy to do, because when you click on comment icon below the photo and then click on their name, Instagram will automatically copy the name into your comment form and then you fill in the rest.

Also, igers in my world do not tolerate mean comments and they encourage questions and sharing your tools of the trade, plus you cannot “borrow” anyone else’s photos.  You can reference them, like their pictures on your feed, but no stealing.

And there are awards to be won.  Okay they are not actual legitimate monetary awards (answering my husband’s question of “so what did you win?!”),  the awards consist of being featured on the page of the people/group who give out the awards and are therefore exposed to their hundreds–or even thousands–of followers who then comment on your  photo and sometimes follow you.  And yes, you must thank them all, but you can do it in 3 to 4 name groups of thank-yous.

Just like anywhere there are scarier streets on Instagram where you don’t want to visit.  Places where there are heart-breaking photos of young girls believing there is no such thing as ‘too thin’ or ‘darker interest’.  Or ‘selfie world’, where it’s just pictures of themselves and then people can comment, (no guarantee of niceness there).

Ahhh, but I prefer to stay in my neighborhood of amazing #photographers, #artists, #nature-lovers, #moms, #animal lovers, and #travelers from all over the world.

So if you are interested in photography and accolades (who isn’t?) and interested in visiting my happy place, then read this article to learn more about how to use Instagram .

Or reach out to me and I can point you in the right direction.

Now seeing as this blog is about marketing, do not fear, next week my blog will address how companies can use Instagram for their business effectively without irritating the residents!
